Easter is back, which once again means navigating Australia’s confusing mishmash of retail trading restrictions over the four-day long weekend.

Good Friday (April 19) and Easter Monday (April 22) are public holidays in all states and territories, but generally, only Friday and Sunday are restricted trading days.

WHAT IS OPEN?

Many shops will be open as normal on Saturday and Monday, but it varies by state.

Restricted trading only applies to large retailers, meaning small grocery chains, convenience stores, petrol stations and chemists, among others, can open at their discretion.

Most major cinema chains will be open as usual over the break.

Public transport will operate on public holiday timetables in most places.

Alcohol is particularly hard to find on Good Friday, with takeaway sales banned across NSW and most bottle shops closed.

Pubs, hotels, bars and clubs, but not small bars, can open until 10pm in NSW, but they can’t sell roadies. In Victoria, pubs can open at noon.

Westfield and Mirvac shopping centres and Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets will all be closed on Friday, but Coles Express convenience stores will be open.

Pretty much everything is open as normal on Saturday.

On Sunday, some supermarkets will be open, as will most bottle shops except for NSW where many will remain closed. Westfield centres will all be open except in NSW where everything will be closed except for Westfield Tuggerah.

Specials

Monday is a public holiday, but pretty much everything will be open as normal.
